Tradition meets modern architecture in South Africa: Wright House

The Wright House sits at the confluence of traditional building methods and comfortable modern architecture. Located in Durban, South Africa, the residence encompasses two different architecture styles that merge in an effort to show the world that contemporary design can be a prolongation of old traditions. A thatched-roof home received an addition that transforms the overall architecture into a surprising connection between the past and the future. This aggregation was possible with the help of Elmo Swart Architects, who took the existing building and gave it a new life. Featuring glazed walls that open up to the surroundings on both ends, the addition keeps some traditional elements in order to make the transition smoother.

An exterior porch and shower covered with a screen of thin branches sets the mood for a more traditional interior design. The furnishings and scarce pieces of furniture allow the relaxed interiors to offer the inhabitants the same peace of mind as the traditional part of the house. Take a look at the pictures and let us know if this would be a house you would consider living in.
