The dimensions for the drawer in this tutorial apply to the 3 Drawer Nightstand I recently built. Adjust as necessary for your project.
TOOLS & MATERIALS:
LUMBER:
- 1/4″ Plywood
- 1 | 1 x 4 @ 6′
- 1 | Drawer Face (I usually use a 1×6 with this size drawer)
CUTS:
- 2 | 1 x 4 @ 15″ (sides)
- 1 | 1 x 4 @ 10 1/2″ (front & back)
- 1 | Plywood @ 12″ x 15″ (bottom)
Step 1.
Build the drawer frame.
Apply wood glue to the ends of the front & back boards, clamp to the sides, and attach with 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws.
drawer front
Use two pocket holes on each side of the front & back boards for a secure joint. Face the pocket holes toward the outside of the drawer to best hide them. The drawer face will hide the pocket holes on the front and the back pocket holes will face the inside of your piece of furniture.
Step 2.
Attach the bottom panel to the drawer frame with wood glue and 1″ finish nails.
This is definitely one of the easiest ways to build a drawer. I’ve seen Anika over at Anika’s DIY Life use it all the time. It’s a great option for dressers, nightstands, end tables, etc.
I typically use bottom-mount slides for this type of drawer to help reinforce the bottom, and I’ve never had an issue with the bottom warping or falling out. However, if you need a stronger drawer, consider building one with all 1x material or use grooves for the bottom panel.
Once your drawer is finished, install the slides and the drawer front and you’re good to go!
Please let me know if you have any questions and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
